Residents encouraged make their gardens more wildlife-friendly this spring

News release 10739, published on 16 Mar 2026

Ahead of the first official day of spring on Friday (20 March), people across Basingstoke and Deane are being encouraged to book a free home visit from eco experts to get top tips for making their gardens more wildlife friendly.

During the visits by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Green Team, residents are given advice and ideas about what they can do in their gardens to create a space they can enjoy that attracts native species like hedgehogs and robins.

The garden wildlife surveys only take an hour. Afterwards, people get a free report with recommended actions that could include adding plants to create habitats and food sources and putting in new water sources, such as fountains.

More than 500 people have had a survey since they were launched two years ago, with residents saying the council’s specialists are “experienced and knowledgeable” and their gardens have “seen such a difference”.

Cabinet Member for the Climate and Ecological Emergency Cllr Chris Tomblin said: “We’re fortunate that animals, insects and birds, such as hedgehogs, stag beetles and song thrushes, still find refuge in our borough even as climate change and shrinking habitats are putting increasing pressure on species like these.

“Your garden doesn’t need to be a haven to help wildlife. Even small changes can create welcoming spaces where native species can thrive.

“Whether you’re setting aside a patch for nature or going for a wilder approach across your whole garden, I encourage you to book a free survey with our advisors. You’ll discover practical ideas to support wildlife and boost your garden’s ability to store carbon, protecting nature and tackling climate change at the same time.”

The council’s Green Team was launched in summer 2023 to support people and businesses to take action on the climate and ecological emergencies.

It followed unanimous calls by councillors to declare a climate emergency for the borough in 2019 and an ecological emergency in 2021.

Free garden wildlife surveys can be booked at www.basingstoke.gov.uk/garden-survey.
