Refurbishing May Place House
May Place House, at the Top of the Town in Basingstoke, provides short-term emergency accommodation for single people at risk of homelessness. Residents are referred to the service through our specialist outreach service and our homelessness team.
In early 2026, we bought May Place House as part of our plans to refurbish the building and secure its future as a vital lifeline for people experiencing homelessness.
An extensive refurbishment of the property began in August 2026. This will modernise May Place House to provide a warm and welcoming space, including accessible rooms, ensuite bathrooms, additional kitchen areas and better communal areas, as well as improved office space where individuals can get one-to-one support.
Support, including alternative accommodation where appropriate, is being offered for people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness while the refurbishment takes place. We are now working to secure a specialist housing and support provider to run the facility when it reopens, which is expected to be in the spring.
As well as the accommodation provided at May Place House, residents also receive specialist support from partners in the Basingstoke and Deane Social Inclusion Partnership, which takes a collective approach to tackling homelessness in the borough.
This includes working closely with individuals to focus on their specific needs and address the often complex issues that have led to them becoming homeless, as well as supporting them as they look to move onto more permanent accommodation.
