A conservation area is a statutory designation of an area which is considered to be 'an area of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance'. Within these areas special planning controls need to be considered when undertaking developments.

A listed building are buildings of particular architectural and/or historic interest with legal protection. These cannot be demolished, extended or altered without planning permission from the local planning authority.
A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) can be placed on single trees, groups of trees or whole woodlands, these protect important trees in the borough. Each tree preservation order can apply to a number of tree preservation order zones or individual trees.
