Place in your green recycling bin.
Please make sure the cans are completely empty. Do not pierce or try to flatten and remove lids.
Aerosols that are not empty should should be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre for disposal.
Up to two 50-litre rubble bags, or one bulky item such as a sink or toilet pedestal will be accepted for free at the Household Waste Recycling Centre, at a maximum frequency of four visits over four weeks. Anything more than this will be chargeable.
If you have larger amounts, consider hiring a skip.
Cartons and Tetra Pak (such as alternative milks, juice and soup cartons) can be recycled in the new temporary recycling banks at our six council-owned recycling sites. The materials should be clean/empty before they are deposited in the containers to mitigate against odours and pests (for example flies, wasps, ants).Find your nearest recycling site.
Hampshire County Council are building a new recycling sorting facility which means from Spring 2028 we will be able to collect these from the kerbside.
You can use the fabric for making clothes and accessories, or as rags and dust sheets.
Duvets and quilts in good condition can be donated to a charity shop, animal rescue or homeless shelter. The Basingstoke Community Furniture Project is always looking for good quality household goods.
You can dispose of this at the Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Put potting compost into the individual compartments of cardboard boxes, then sow with seeds.
Plastic egg boxes can be useful for storing small items of jewellery too, like earrings. They are also ideal for storing small craft items like buttons, sequins and beads.
Cut the lid off a plastic egg box and add small amounts of water-based paints to each compartment - ideal for artists!
You can recycle cardboard egg boxes in your green recycling bin. You can also add cardboard egg boxes to your compost bin in small pieces. If your compost heap is dry, try splashing them with water so they rot down quicker.
Plastic or polystyrene egg boxes cannot be recycled and should be placed in your black/grey waste bin.
If your item is not working, consider having it repaired. There are repair cafes where you can take your items to be fixed for a small donation.
Items which are working and in good condition can be donated to the Basingstoke Community Furniture Project. Large domestic white goods or working electrical items can also be donated to local charities, such as St Michael's Hospice.
Sell or donate locally to a charity shop, or online using Freegle.
Small electrical items (up to a maximum size of 58cm wide x 21cm deep) can be taken to a Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) drop off point.
Bulky items can also be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre or collected via our bulky waste collection service (fees payable)
Do not pour engine oil down drains. The Household Waste Recycling Centre accepts engine oil in sealed leak-proof containers.
Please speak to site staff who will ensure it is disposed of correctly.
Note: a maximum of ten litres can be deposited per household per six months. If you have more than the accepted amount, please contact a private disposal company.
You can put envelopes in your green recycling bin - including any 'windows', stamps or sticky strips
Padded envelopes cannot be recycled. Please put these in your black/grey waste bin.
Choose products that have long lasting rechargeable batteries.
Choose reusable or refillable instead of disposable e-cigarettes/vapes.
These devices are intended to be reused, but charging cables and accessories can also be used in compatible devices.
E-cigarettes/vapes can be recycled by returning them to retailers.

E-cigarettes/vapes contain hidden batteries that can cause fires when put in rubbish, recycling or litter bins. Please remove the battery if possible and recycle separately in a battery recycling bin. Take the rest of the e-cigarette/vape to a Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) drop off point.
If you cannot remove the battery, take the whole e-cigarette/vape to a WEEE drop off point.
The Household Waste Recycling Centre takes small household fire extinguishers. Commercial or business fire extinguishers should be taken back to where you bought them.
Unused fireworks should be returned to where you bought them from.
Fireworks cannot be recycled. If you have used the firework, we advise that you soak them in water overnight, then dispose of them in your black/grey waste bin.
Flares are not accepted at the Household Waste Recycling Centre and should not be placed in your black/grey waste bin.
You need to use a third-party service to dispose of flares. You may be breaking the law if you do not make sure flares are disposed of safely, to prevent any risk to other people or property. Please see the Government website for more information.
You can use silicone or beeswax reusable wraps as an alternative when wrapping food or reuseable box when making packed lunches.
Try as much as possible to clean, flatten and put it back in the drawer for next time. Containers can be used for seed trays.

You can dispose of foil and foil containers in your black/grey waste bin.
You can recycle these in your green recycling bin. Please clean and rinse first.
There are many easy ways to reduce your food waste, as simple as cooking with leftovers, making better use of your freezer, and understanding your best before dates.

Use the weekly food waste collection service for food that isn't eaten. Place food waste in your kitchen caddy (you can use a liner if you wish) and then transfer it to your outdoor caddy ready for your weekly collection.

A wormery may be a good choice if you have a small garden. This produced an excellent liquid fertilizer which can be applied to plants and flowers.

If it no longer works and needs to be recycled you could check if your electrical retailer will take your old appliance when they deliver your new one. Alternatively, these items can also be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre or collected via our bulky waste collection service (fees payable)
Buy good quality furniture that will last a long time. Also, rather than replace something when it's broken, see if you can get it repaired at a local furniture repair shop.
