Nappies

Reduce and reuse

Consider using cloth nappies to reduce your overall nappy waste. Hampshire residents can receive 15% discount on reusable nappies. For more information visit Hampshire County Council Smart Living webpage.

Dispose

Disposable nappies should be tied up in bags and disposed of in your black/grey waste bin. Carefully squash the air out of the bags to create more space in the bin.

Needles (clinical waste)

Dispose

There is a special collection for clinical waste. Contact us on 01256 844844 for more information.

Please do not dispose of clinical waste in your black/grey waste bin.

Newspapers

Reduce

Consider subscribing to your preferred newspaper online.

Reuse

Why not save your newspapers for a craft project? It is ideal for paper mache!

Newspaper can also be used as packing material when moving house or wrapping delicate gifts.

Recycle

Place newspapers in your green recycling bin.

Oil

Oil: used cooking oil

Reuse

Allow it to cool to room temperature, strain it through a sieve to remove any leftover food and store it in a reusable container.

Dispose

Put in a container and place in your black/grey waste bin.

Do not dispose of oil down drains, in toilets, onto soil or near water.

Oil: used engine oil

Recycle

Do not pour engine oil down drains. The Household Waste Recycling Centre accepts engine oil in sealed leak-proof containers.

Please speak to site staff who will ensure it is disposed of correctly.

Note: a maximum of ten litres can be deposited per household per six months. If you have more than the accepted amount, please contact a private disposal company.

Ovens

Reuse

If in good condition you can sell or donate locally using Freegle. The Basingstoke Community Furniture Project is always looking for good quality household goods.

Recycle

If it no longer works and needs to be recycled you could check if your electrical retailer will take your old appliance when they deliver your new one. Alternatively, these items can also be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre or collected via our bulky waste collection service (fees payable)

Padded envelopes

Reuse

You can use padded envelopes for transporting fragile items in the post or when moving house. You can also reuse these by sticking labels over the old address and resealing with tape.

Dispose

Padded envelopes cannot be recycled. Please put these in your black/grey waste bin.

Paint and emulsion

Reduce

Dulux provide an online calculator you can use to work out how much you may need of different types of paint before you buy.

Reuse

Paint that is unopened or in usable condition can be given away on social media pages or you can donate your leftover paint to Community RePaint, a UK wide network redistributing surplus paint at reduced prices to those who need it.

Recycle

Paint can be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre in a suitable, sealed container. A maximum of five litres per month per household can be deposited.

Pallets

Reuse

Transform wooden pallets into stunning, functional items for your home and garden. Popular ideas include building sturdy raised garden beds, rustic coffee tables, vertical herb walls, shoe racks, and even low-profile living room sectionals.

Recycle

Pallets can be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre and recycled as timber providing they have been used for a household purpose.

Paper

Reduce

Always consider whether you really need to print. Make sure your computer is set to print double sided.

Reuse

Use both sides of blank paper and reuse scrap paper for notes

Recycle

Place clean and dry white and coloured paper, newspapers and magazines, catalogues and directories, leaflets and envelopes in your green recycling bin.

Dispose

You can't recycle tissues, kitchen paper, shredded paper, coated wrapping paper or hardback books/catalogues (see 'books' to find out how to recycle them). Place these items in your black/grey waste bin.

Shredded paper

Reuse

You can reuse shredded paper as bedding for small animals or add to your compost bin.

Dispose

We cannot recycle shredded paper, you need to put it in your black/grey waste bin.

Paper towels

Reduce

Use reusable cloths to clean worktops and mop up spills instead of paper towels. Keep a mop, some old towels/t-shirts handy – they can be used to clean almost anything.

Recycle

Sheets of kitchen roll cannot be recycled but the cardboard inner tube of kitchen rolls can be placed in your green recycling bin.

Dispose

Cannot be recycled in your recycling bins because they are made of thin fibres that make recycling extremely difficult. They are also very often contaminated spills or messes, the food waste, grease or dirt which also makes them non-recyclable. Place in your black/grey waste bin.

Pesticides

Recycle

The Household Waste Recycling Centre accepts hazardous household waste and chemicals. Please ensure they are in sealed leak-proof containers.

Please speak to site staff who will ensure it is disposed of correctly.

Note: a maximum of five litres can be deposited per month per household.

Pet food

Reduce

Try buying larger amounts of the product so you will be disposing of less packaging over time.

Reuse

If you have any pet food you no longer need, donate to pet charities, such as the RSPCA. Find out more about donating pet food on the RSPCA website.

Recycle

If the food has expired both wet and dry pet food can be disposed of in your food waste caddy.

Petrol and diesel

Dispose

Do not dispose of petrol down drains, onto soil or near water.

You cannot take petrol and diesel to the Household Waste Recycling Centre. Contact a hazardous waste disposal company to dispose of it in a safe way.

Red Industries, located at Lasham is the nearest hazardous waste contractor to Basingstoke. Please visit Waste Management, Recycling and Disposal Services | RED Industries and fill in the enquiry form at the bottom of the page.

Plasterboard

Recycle

A limited amount of waste from home improvements or DIY can be disposed of at the Household Waste Recycling Centre.

If your household allowance has been exceeded, you will be charged to dispose of plasterboard.

There is a dedicated container for plasterboard - please ask site staff for assistance.

Visitors wishing to dispose of plasterboard, plaster or gypsum based products mixed with other waste types must separate them prior to visiting the Household Waste Recycling Centre so they can be disposed of separately. The removal of tiles from plasterboard may be made easier if soaked in water.

Plastic bags

Reduce

By using a reusable bag instead. Remember to take it with you when you are shopping.

Reuse

Take your plastic bags with you when you are shopping and reuse them, or you could use them as a general waste bag or for food waste.

Recycle

Most supermarkets accept carrier bags as well as other soft plastic wrappers and films. Look out for the recycling bins, usually located by the main entrance. Check with the supermarket to see what they offer.

Dispose

You can't recycle plastic carrier bags in your green recycling bin. Place them in your black/grey waste bin.

Plastic bottles

This includes all bottles, like milk, water, shampoo, laundry liquid, bleach, detergent, handwash, shower gel.

Reduce

You can get reusable water bottles for on the go drinking. You can also consider re-fillable bottles for laundry liquid, detergent, handwash, shampoo and shower gel.

Recycle

In your green recycling bin, with lids, and any pumps or triggers, still on.

Before recycling, rinse the bottles out, squash, and replace the lids. For milk bottles you can place the lids inside the bottle before squashing it.

Plastic pots, tubs and trays and punnets

Reduce

Buy loose items like fruit and vegetables where possible. Lots of food in plastic containers can be bought in bulk or made from fresh instead.

Also, try shopping at markets and zero waste shops to reduce food packaging.

Reuse

Use takeaway tubs and pots for storing leftover food in your fridge or freezer. Pots and trays can be used for paint, glue and other craft activities.

Recycle

Plastic pots, tubs, trays and cartons can be recycled in the new temporary recycling banks at our six council-owned recycling sites. The materials should be clean/empty before they are deposited in the containers to mitigate against odours and pests (for example flies, wasps, ants).Find your nearest recycling site.

Hampshire County Council are building a new recycling sorting facility which means from Spring 2028 we will be able to collect these from the kerbside.

Polystyrene

Reuse

Polystyrene can be reused for transporting fragile items in the post or when moving house.

Dispose

Polystyrene cannot be recycled and should be disposed of in your black/grey waste bin.

If you have large quantities that will not fit in your black/grey waste bin, please take it to the Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Printer ink and toner cartridges

Reduce

Print only when necessary. A lot of documents can be read or scanned on a mobile device.

Reuse

Refill ink cartridges where possible and are more cost effective.

Recycle

Most printer cartridges can be returned to their manufacturer for recycling. These take-back schemes vary from company to company, so please contact them directly for more information.

Printer cartridges can also be taken to one of the recycling sites in the borough.

Dispose

If take-back schemes are not available to you, printer cartridges should be placed in your black/grey waste bin.

Pyrex ovenware

Reuse

Sell or donate locally to a charity shop or online using Freegle.

Dispose

Pyrex cannot be recycled. While pyrex is a type of glass, it has been specially treated in the manufacturing process to withstand high temperatures, which makes it non-recyclable. Place in your black/grey waste bin, carefully wrapped.
