Wallpaper

Reduce

Measure walls carefully before buying wallpaper to avoid excess waste

Reuse

Use leftover wallpaper for crafts, drawer liners, or decorative projects. Cover storage boxes, shelves, or furniture to give them a new look. Save offcuts for patch repairs if wallpaper becomes damaged. Donate unused rolls to schools, community groups, or creative projects.

Dispose

We cannot recycle wallpaper. You can put in your black/grey waste bin. Large amounts of wallpaper from your home can be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Water filter cartridges

Reduce

Choose long-lasting or reusable water filter systems to reduce replacement frequency. Follow maintenance instructions to maximise filter life. Only replace filters when recommended, rather than prematurely.

Recycle

Retailers such as Tesco, Sainsbury's and The Range offer a take back service for Brita filters. Find out where you can recycle Brita cartridges.

Dispose

Put any cartridges that aren't Brita in your black/grey waste bin.

Washing machines

Reuse

If in good condition you can sell or donate locally using Freegle. The Basingstoke Community Furniture Project is always looking for good quality household goods.

Recycle

If it no longer works and needs to be recycled you could check if your electrical retailer will take your old appliance when they deliver your new one. Alternatively, these items can also be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre or collected via our bulky waste collection service (fees payable)

Wipes

Reduce

There are a range of reusable and washable cloths available to purchase online. Alternatively, you can make your own by repurposing an old item of clothing.

Only use wipes when necessary. Avoid taking multiple wipes when one will do the job.

Reuse

Most wet wipes are designed for single use and should not be reused for hygiene reasons. Reuse the plastic wipe container or dispenser by purchasing refill packs.

Dispose

Baby wipes, cosmetic wipes, cleaning wipes and moist toilet tissues are not recyclable and are not flushable either even though some labels say they are. They should always be placed in the black/grey bin.

Choose wipes made from biodegradable or compostable materials where appropriate.

Wood

Reuse

Transform wood into stunning, functional items for your home and garden. Popular ideas include building industrial-style shelving, crafting rustic wood risers, trays and plant hangers, and creating custom picture frames and coat racks.

Recycle

Treated, untreated and mixed wood can be recycled at the Household Waste Recycling Centre. Bulky items such as furniture can be sold in the on site sales area for reuse.

Dispose

The Environment Agency classifies redundant railway sleepers, which will have been treated with creosote or copper chromium Arsenic (CCA) for their original use, as hazardous waste wood. This means they can no longer be accepted at the Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Wrapping paper

Reuse

Wrapping paper that hasn't been ripped can be reused as much as possible.

Dispose

You cannot recycle wrapping paper, and you should put these in your black/grey waste bin.
